Canada man booked for bigamy, rape and fraud – Times of India

Ludhiana: The police on Sunday booked a resident of Canada for bigamy, raping and cheating a woman.

The 31-year-old woman had lodged a police complaint on September 3, 2021. After an inquiry, the police have lodged the FIR under sections 376 (rape), 420 (cheating), 494 (marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

The woman said in her police complaint, “I got married to the accused, who hails from Hoshiarpur and is settled in Canada, in September 2017. A Hoshiarpur-based marriage bureau had suggested the match. It had claimed that the man was unmarried and would take the bride abroad. After we got married, the man stayed in India for about a month and then went back to Canada.”

The accused stayed in touch and kept taking money from her on the pretext of calling her to Canada. “In September 2021, I received a message from his first wife. She told me that he was married to her,” she added.

ASI Subhash Chand said, “The accused was already married when he, through a marriage bureau, tied the knot with the Ludhiana woman. He had taken about Rs 24 lakh from her on the pretext of taking her to Canada. In the meantime, his first wife suspected him of having an affair. She somehow managed to get the contact of the Ludhiana woman and told her everything.”

Besides her husband, the police have also registered a case against his relative who lives with him in Canada and a Hoshiarpur couple, who had suggested the match.
