MONTREAL — A woman died Monday after she was hit by a plane while she was mowing the runway at a Canadian airfield, investigators said.
The 27-year-old woman was on a riding lawnmower when a wing of the plane struck her while landing around 12:50 p.m. at the Saint-Esprit airfield, CTV News reported.
“What we can understand is that the woman was on a tractor mowing the lawn and when the plane did its descent to land on the airstrip the airplane hit the woman,” Marc Tessier, Quebec police spokesperson, told CNN.
The woman was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. She worked for a company that provided maintenance at the airport.
The pilot of the Nanchang CJ-6 aircraft was taken to a hospital and treated for shock.
The Transportation and Safety Board of Canada is investigating.
At the time of the incident there were light winds and few clouds making the weather “appropriate for visual flight rules flying,” Chris Krepski, spokesperson for the flight safety group, told CNN.
